In this most important developmental period of life emersion in nature provides the ideal stimulation to all sensory pathways as the infant understands the world around them through exploratory play. As they develop into toddlers, they need support in their ability to grow independently from their parents without feeling afraid. Activities in this stage supports stimulation to all sensory pathways to promote a sense of well-being with others.
As young children interact with their environment rapidly gaining new skills, nature’s sensory rich environment supports children to express themselves creatively without fear of being in trouble. Activities at this stage support the egocentric nature of children as they engage in parallel play with growth in physical, communication and social emotional skills.
As children develop independence, self-esteem, and enjoy social interaction with others, nature provides multiple opportunities for challenges in solving problems that exist in the here and now. Creative activities in this stage such as log and hay building, tree painting, letterboxing, and water bucket relays help children also support team building, gaining new knowledge and learn to identify the world of work and develop a work ethic.
The journey of the adolescent to establish their own identity is unpredictable. Teens are often anxious about their physical development, relationships, and can display risky behavior as they fight off insecurities and judgment from their peers. Nature provides numerous opportunities to establish a sense of who they are without judgment. Activities at this stage promote fun, laughing, and reading emotions, as they solve problems using abstract logic to develop their own sense of belonging.
Young adults are surrounded by the responsibilities of adulthood with work, relationships and beginning their own family. Nature sets the stage for young adults to experience close relationship and desire long term commitment. Activities in this stage support the development of leadership skills and promote self-esteem, while creating their life desires as they commit to their partners, become a parent as well as members of a work force and a community.
Individuals at this stage have had rich life experiences as they begin to transition from work to retirement. The multiple sanctuaries of nature allow the expression of their sense of caring and concern for their family and the younger generation. Activities at this stage allow them to reflect on their own life journey and the legacy that they will leave behind.
Nature provides a vast array of peace and serenity to support individual’s acceptance of the life that they have lived as they realize they are facing their mortality. Maintaining a connection to friends, family and their community are a priority to allow individuals to age in place with grace and dignity.
